The Plains Twp. Tax Collector is elected at large and is responsible for collecting Township taxes.

The two primary taxes for residents within the Township of Plains are the Real Estate Tax and the Earned Income Tax. The Real Estate Tax is calculated by multiplying the millage rate times the property assessment, which is a percentage of market value as determined by the Luzerne County Board of Assessment.

The Township earned income tax on residents is charged at a rate of 1%. The 1% earned income is divided equally between the school district and the municipality. Taxes are deposited into the Township’s General Fund to pay for services such as Police Protection, Fire Protection, Road Maintenance, Building Regulations and Recreation activities.
